Satellite: AsiaSat 2 -> Amos 5i -> AsiaSat 2

The Hong Kong-based consortium, Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company, has been the most important communication company in Hong Kong. From its orbital slot above Singapore, Asiasat can service users in China, Japan, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Broadcasting the Star TV service 24 hours a day Asiasat broke through national regulatory structures for television programs. Within the footprint of the satellite, from Kabul to Hokkaido, video, audio and data signals can be exchanged with the use of three meter dishes.

The more capable Asiasat 2 was launched on 28 November 1995 by a CZ-2E Based on a Lockheed-Martin AS-7000 spacecraft bus, Asiasat 2 is a 3-axis stabilized with an initial launch mass of 3.5 metric tons and carries a payload of 24, 55-W, 6/4GHz and 9, 115-W 14/12 GHz transponders. Asiasat 2 will be parked at 100.5 degrees E, following an agreement with Thailand to avoid radio interference. The in-orbit loss of the AT&T Telstar 402 satellite contributed to a year-long delay in the launch of the similar AsiaSat 2.

In late 2009 AsiaSat 2 was sold to israeli Spacecom Ltd. to be operated as Amos 5i to be operated ad 17 degrees E as a stop gap measure until Amos 5 becomes operational in 2011.

In late 2011 Strategic cooperation agreement signed between AsiaSat and Thaicom is effective now with the arrival of AsiaSat-2 satellite at 120 degrees East.

GE Astro-Space Division Receives Highly Coveted AsiaSat 2 Contract

Princeton, N.J. November 1992 -- Based GE Astro-Space Division garnered yet another international satellite construction contract last week when Hong Kong-based Asia Satellite Telecommunications Ltd. (AsiaSat) awarded a $133 million contract for its AsiaSat 2 follow-on spacecraft.

As reported by SATELLITE NEWS exclusively more than two months ago, AsiaSat had been negotiating with both GE and industry giant Hughes Aircraft Co. for the much-sought-after contract (SN, Aug. 24, pp. 1-2). Matra-Marconi and Aerospatiale Inc., both of France, were eliminated from consideration for the contract earlier this year.

The order calls for the production and delivery of one GE Series-7000 satellite bus. At launch, it had a mass of 3,379 kilograms (7,450 lb), and a design life of thirteen years. It carries twenty four C and Ku bandstransponders.

AsiaSat 2 Bird Granted Export Licence For China

13 January 1994 - Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co Ltd reports that its AsiaSat 2 bird has been granted an export licence from the US Department of Commerce for delivery to China for launch in early 1995: AsiaSat is equally owned by Hutchison Whampoa Ltd of Hong Kong, China International Trust & Investment Corp and Cable & Wireless Plc; AsiaSat 2 was manufactured by Martin Marietta Astro Space, and the footprint of a single C-band transponder on the satellite spreads from Turkey to Tokyo, Commonwealth of Independent States to Australia, or 3,300m people; a third bird is now planned.

RE: AsiaSat 2 (100.5E)
Telstar 4 Mystery Delays Asiasat 2 Launch

LONDON: 11 Jan 1995 - Asiasa has delayed the launch of its Asiasat 2 on a Chinese Long March booster, originally scheduled for this month, until at least the middle of the year while the September 1994 failure of a similar Martin Marietta Astro Space-built satellite, the Telstar 402, is investigated fully.

The Asiasat 2 and AT&T's Telstar, which was lost after a successful Ariane V67 launch into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), are Satcom 7000-series spacecraft, with identical liquid-apogee engines - an integral part of the spacecraft-propulsion system.

The Hong Kong-based operator has decided to wait until the Martin Marietta investigation is completed, in case hardware changes to the satellite are required. So far, the investigation has "...eliminated more than 600 of the 800 or so possible failure scenarios", says Martin Marietta Astro Space.

"Attention is focusing on the pyro-valves in the propulsion system. It appears the apogee engine was not involved in the failure," says Martin Marietta, adding that the spacecraft" did not disintegrate and ground-based sensors have determined that it is in an elliptical orbit".

Unofficial reports suggest that the satellite had disintegrated, as loss of contact coincided with the tank pressurisation. Fragments from a satellite break-up in GEO would be difficult to track.

The one large object from the V67 flight being tracked in GTO appears to be the Ariane third stage, which is normally left in this orbit after the launch phase.

Radar cross-section data indicate that the object measures 16.93m2, which compares with the 15.84m2 of a previously identified Ariane third stage.

A typical large satellite of the size of a Telstar 4 measures about 9m2 on a radar cross-section reading. Despite the evidence, Martin Marietta claims that the object in GTO is the Telstar 4 and not the Ariane stage.

RE: AsiaSat 2 (100.5E)
AsiaSat-2 Lifts Off On Chinese Long March Rocket

HONG KONG: 28 November, 1995 - A Chinese Long March 2E rocket carrying an Asian communications satellite blasted off successfully on Tuesday from a remote launch site in southwestern China, an AsiaSat executive said in Hong Kong.

The US$200 million AsiaSat-2 was the first commercial satellite sent up from China's main launch centre in Xichang, Sichuan Province, since an Apstar satellite aboard a Long March 2E rocket exploded in January.

"We are very pleased to announce the successful injection of AsiaSat-2 into the low earth orbit and the successful separation of the rocket and payload," said Peter Jackson, chief executive of Asia Satelitte Telecommunications Co Ltd (AsiaSat) in a statement released in Hong Kong.

Pre-launch jitters were intense as a result of the January explosion, AsiaSat executives said.

The launch was postponed twice causing a delay of nine months. China and the manufacturer of the ill-fated Hughes Space and Communications Inc satellite blamed windshear for the explosion just 50 seconds after liftoff.

Unlike the Apstar launch, broadcast live on Chinese television, AsiaSat-2's launch was a low-key affair.

AsiaSat executives tracking it in Hong Kong had to telephone their counterparts in Xichang for news of the liftoff. It would take several days before the AsiaSat-2 launch, which will be tracked from the Alpha Telemetry Tracking and Control Station in New Jersey, is completed and declared a success or failure.

AsiaSat-2's original launch, set for March, was postponed pending an investigation into the cause of a failure involving U.S. telecommunications giant AT&T in late 1994.

The AT&T's rocket launch was successful but the company was unable to make contact with its Martin Marietta Corp-built satellite when it reached orbit.

A rescheduled date for AsiaSat-2's debut in August was put back until November while engineers reviewed the investigations into the January explosion.

AsiaSat said the Chinese rocketmaker, Great Wall Industry Corp, had strengthened the fairing, or nose section, of the Long March 2E ahead of the launch.

From its geostationary orbit of 100.5 degrees east, AsiaSat-2, a Lockheed Martin 7000-series, will cover 53 countries in Asia.

Its footprint was designed to range across Australasia, east Asia, the Indian sub-continent, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and parts of the former Soviet Union.

Customers include STAR TV, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, Associated Press's television arm APTV, Portugal-based Marconi Global Communications and Worldwide Television News (WTN).

Also awaiting news of the launch were Hongkong Telecommunications Ltd, Germany's Deutsche Welle, Pacific Century Group and Malaysia's TIME Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, owned by Renong Group.

AsiaSat is equally owned by Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, state-owned China International Trust and Investment Corp (CITIC) and Cable Wireless Plc.

The consortium plans a third satellite launch in 1997.

AsiaSat-1 was launched in 1990 from Xichang in China's debut in the commercial satellite launch industry.

RE: AsiaSat 2 (100.5E)
Asiasat 2: Extend The Boundary

On November 28, 1995, a Chinese Long March 2E rocket deployed the new satellite on behalf of Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co., Ltd. of Hong Kong. Called AsiaSat 2, this new "Hot Bird" for the Asia/Pacific region embraces 53 countries with in its C-band footprint and therefore can potentially serve over 3.3 billion people or 63 percent of the world's population. This new spacecraft already is on station at 100.5 degrees east longitude. AsiaSat 2 carries twenty-four C-band (3.62 to 4.2GHz) transponders (twenty with a bandwidth of 36-MHz and four with a bandwidth of 72-MHz) and nine 54-MHz-wide Ku-band transponders. The satellite's C-band footprint is desined to provide extefrsive,high-powered (55-watts per transponder) coveragefrom Eastern Europe to Far East Russia and fromJapan toAustralia and even portions of NewZealand, albeit at very low elevation look angles. On the Ku-band side (12.2 to 12.5 GHz), AsiaSat 2's narrower coverage beam focuses on the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Although there new satellite uses powerful 115-watt (TWTA) Ku-band amplifiers, any reception in Australia or New Zealand will depend on there uncertainties of satellite sidelobe spillover. In December of 1995, AsiaSat 2 began transmitting a "season's Greetings: Extend the Boundary" test card which could be received throughout the wide expanse of the spacecraft's C-band footprint. Just what can we expect in the way of future programming?

In 1994, STAR TV snapped up the rights to a total of eight C-band and three Ku-band transponders on AsiaSat 2. Sometime between now and April of 1996, STAR TV is scheduled to begin transmitting at least one multichannel, digitally compressed TV program package to Indonesian homes, with additional packages for other Asian markets to follow. STAR TV's new "DigiSTAR" TV delivery system will eventually transmit about fifty pay TV services through AsiaSat 2. The DigiSTAR IRDs, which are being manufactured by Pace Micro Technologr Ltd. will be fully compliant with the MPEG-2 Digtial Video Broadcasting (DVB) standard. STAR TV intends to customize its new digital services to achieve the maximum possible viewing audience in each of its target markets. To achieve ttrisgoal, the Hong Kong based company is entering into partnerships with local programmers exactly the opposite of the original plan developed by previous STAR TV owner Hutchvision, which called for marketing just two sets of channels through out AsiaSat's northern and southern coverage beams. The pan Asian approach has now given away to an emphasis on local programming as regional programme's recognised the need for local content if their programs were to enjoy lasting appeal, says Peter Jackson, CEO of Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co., Ltd. in his introduction to the new Asian edition of The World of Satellite TV "In this headymix of politics, business and technology we will increasingly see new alliances between regional and national programmers.

RE: AsiaSat 2 (100.5E)
Germany's DeTeSat Signs For AsiaSat

Tokyo, Japan, 29 March 1998 -- Germany's DeTeSat, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, has leased C-band capacity on AsiaSat 2 to provide voice, data and image transmission services throughout the C.I.S. region.

Initially, the capacity will be used to establish satellite links between Moscow and the Russian Far East to serve the communications needs of multinational companies. "With the AsiaSat 2 capacity, we are able to expand our services over the C.I.S. and other regions, forming part of our global satellite communications network," said Mr. Gerd Scheuermann, Managing Director of DeTeSat.

"We use AsiaSat 2 because it offers excellent coverage. In one single beam, we can offer satellite communications services stretching from Moscow to the Russian Far East, reaching cities such as Vladivostok and Khabarovsk," he added.

Headquartered in Bonn, Germany, DeTeSat is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG. Deutsche Telekom currently operates 3,500 VSAT stations in Europe. The products and services offered by DeTeSat range from point-to-point links to corporate networks of any size which provide customized solutions for international voice, data and image transmission.

New Services On Asiasat

Hong Kong, 31 March 1998 -- The latest edition of AsiaSat's newsletter details the following new services being carried by the company's satellites: Beijing Municipal TV and Shanxi Provincial TV launched their digital television services using AsiaSat 2 Ku-band capacity. Via satellite transmission, the television stations are now able to further enhance viewership across China.

STAR TV launched STAR News channel, on AsiaSat 2. The channel, a 24 hours news channel, was launched in February to provide comprehensive news coverage for the general elections in India. It is distributed in analogue, free to air format mainly to cable operators across the country.

EMTV, Papua New Guinea's television network, commenced its services on AsiaSat 2. Using C-band capacity, the channel is in digital format on a free to air basis.

Radio Nederland Wereldomroep joined the European Bouquet on AsiaSat 2. The radio channel is broadcasting along with other five television and eight radio stations in digital, free to air format across the satellite's extensive footprint.

RE: AsiaSat 2 (100.5E)
U.S. State Department Charges Lockheed Martin With Export Control Violations

April 09, 2000 - The U.S. State Department Office of Defense Trade Controls has charged Lockheed Martin with 30 separate violations of the Arms Export Control Act. The company was told it has 30 days to respond to civil charges, which could result in a fine as high as US$15 million and a ban on exporting satellites or satellite technology for up to three years. Lockheed Martin denies the charges and vows to contest them. A General Accounting Office report that looked into the matter last year said that while Lockheed Martin's action "represented a loss of technology, [it] did not significantly harm national security."

Four of the charges relate to alleged travel by a team of Martin Marietta AstroSpace engineers in January 1994 to Hohhot, China, for test firings of motors to be used in launching an Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co. (AsiaSat), Hong Kong, telecommunication satellite, AsiaSat-2, and for discussions with officials of the Chinese company involved in carrying out the project. The motor, reportedly, had suffered multiple failures during test firings. The U.S. State Department alleges Martin Marietta AstroSpace failed to advise the U.S. government of these events at least 30 days prior to the proposed meeting, as was required. The charges also allege that Martin Marietta AstroSpace failed to ensure the requisite presence of a qualified Defense Department monitor. Martin Marietta AstroSpace had obtained a U.S. Commerce Department license before assessing the satellite motor. Lockheed Martin believes, "Martin Marietta at that time took actions that were reasonable and consistent with those licenses."

After Martin Marietta AstroSpace completed its study, the company forwarded 10 copies of the 50-page document to AsiaSat. AsiaSat is partially owned by China International Trust and Investment Corp. (CITIC), a conglomerate owned by the Chinese government. CITIC was a passive investor, owning one-third of AsiaSat. Martin Marietta AstroSpace performed the technical assessment under a strict confidentiality agreement with AsiaSat that prohibited dissemination to firms or government entities in China. Prior to sending AsiaSat copies of the report, Martin Marietta AstroSpace sent its study for review by the U.S. Department of Defense, where export control officials removed what they considered sensitive information that could have helped China improve its military rocket capabilities. Following the Pentagon review, Martin Marietta AstroSpace shared the edited document with China Great Wall Industries, a company also owned by the Chinese government, the developer and operator of the Long March 2E rocket.

The U.S. State Department alleges that Martin Marietta AstroSpace sent the unedited version to AsiaSat before the U.S. Department of Defense had blacked out all but five of the 50 pages. Sharing the redacted version of the study with China Great Wall Industries violated U.S. export regulations, which prohibit any technical assistance "that might enhance [Chinese] space launch vehicles." In performing and sharing the study, Martin Marietta AstroSpace also violated U.S. rules by identifying flaws in Chinese testing procedures, confirming the results of Chinese tests pinpointing faulty insulation, and identifying problems with solid rocket motor technologies.

The SpaB-17 solid rocket perigee kick motor, built by Hexi Company, used to send AsiaSat-2 into its final orbit, is capable of firing only once, and was, for export control purposes, a commercial commodity regulated by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Other, more sophisticated kick motors, capable of firing multiple times and repositioning satellites once they are in their final orbits are considered defense technologies subject to regulation by the U.S. State Department.

Six years ago, Martin Marietta AstroSpace thought it was operating on a sound legal basis having a U.S. Commerce Department license. Today, Lockheed Martin would first check with both the U.S. State and Defense departments prior to performing such a study.

Martin Marietta merged with Lockheed in 1995, to form the Lockheed Martin Corporation. AsiaSat bought AsiaSat-2, an AstroSpace 7000 satellite bus, from GE AstroSpace in October 1992, though it was built by Martin Marietta AstroSpace. Martin Marietta agreed to buy AstroSpace from General Electric in November of 1992, closing the purchase in April of 1993. The satellite was launched on a Long March 2E on November 28, 1995.

CGWIC Denies The Allegations That Lockheed Martin Provided Launch Vehicle Technology To China

Date:2000-04-09

A GCWIC spokesman issued a statement on April 9, 2000, denying allegations that launch vehicle technical assistance has been provided by Lockheed-Martin to China as reported in the U.S. media. The spokesman explained that CGWIC and Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co., Ltd. signed a launch services contract on March 2, 1993 to use a LM-2E launch vehicle to launch a Lockheed Martin-built AsiaSat-2 satellite into low earth orbit, as well as a purchase agreement for a Earth Perigee Kick Motor (EPKM). Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co., Ltd.’s selected the LM-2E launch vehicle for the AsiaSat-2 launch because of the Chinese space industry over 40-years' experience in the successful development of a range of launch vehicles, its mastery of mature liquid and solid motor technologies and its manufacturing skills for a range of solid motors with similar specifications. We hereby firmly assert that China developed the satellite perigee kick motor entirely relying on its own efforts. At no point has CGWIC acquired any technical assistance in this regard from Lockheed Martin or any other party.

AsiaSat Buys A Fully Integrated Satellite Control System From Integral Systems; Integral's EPOCH Integrated Product Suite To Fly AsiaSat's Lockheed Martin And Boeing Satellites

February 12, 2004 - Integral Systems, Inc. , the leading provider of satellite ground systems and Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company Limited (AsiaSat), Asia's leading satellite operator, today jointly announced the signing of a contract for Integral to provide a single, consolidated primary satellite control system to AsiaSat for its AsiaSat 2, AsiaSat 3S and AsiaSat 4 satellites. The AsiaSat 2 satellite is based on the Lockheed Martin Series 7000 platform, while the AsiaSat 3S and AsiaSat 4 satellites are based on the Boeing 601HP platform.

The system will be based upon Integral Systems' EPOCH IPS (Integrated Product Suite) that has become the industry standard for consolidated operations of mixed fleets of satellites. This contract will deliver AsiaSat an easy-to-use, fully integrated multi-satellite control center using a single platform that provides complete real-time command and control, orbital analysis and maneuver planning as well as offline trending/analysis functions for all three satellites of the AsiaSat fleet. The new system will simplify AsiaSat's satellite operation, and in turn reduce operating cost.

Mr. Peter Jackson, Chief Executive Officer of AsiaSat said, "This contract underlines our commitment to quality satellite service. With this new satellite control system, we are able to consolidate our satellite operation under one single platform and offer further redundancy in monitoring and command, thus strengthen our service efficiency and reliability."

"We are extremely pleased by this new contract in Asia," said Steve Chamberlain, Chairman and CEO of Integral Systems. "The opportunity to deliver a control system to AsiaSat, Asia's first privately owned regional satellite operator, and one of the premier commercial satellite operators in the world, is particularly exciting for us," he added.

Integral Systems has also supplied satellite ground systems to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), Loral Skynet, Newskies Satellites, Echostar, Sirius Satellite Radio, Binariang Satellite Systems, Shin Satellite Public Company Ltd., SES Americom, Optus, ChinaSat, EOSAT, Alcatel, TRW, ROCSAT, EUMETSAT and Orbital Sciences, among others.

Hong Kong, 30th August, 2006 - Asia's leading satellite operator Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company Limited (AsiaSat) and public broadcaster Radio Television Brunei (RTB) announced today the signing of a lease agreement for the use of C-band capacity on AsiaSat 2 for free to air distribution of the RTB International channel, serving viewers in Asia, Australasia and the Middle East.

RTB International will commence broadcasting on AsiaSat 2 from 1st September, providing programming in Malay and English languages 24 hours a day on a comprehensive range of content including news, current affairs, religious, dramas, musicals, game shows, documentaries, sports, magazines and educational programmes.

"We are very excited to expand our broadcast service to the whole of Asia, and further to the Middle East and Australasia via AsiaSat 2. We have been using AsiaSat 2 for the Asiavision daily television news exchange service with many other Asian broadcasters for the last few years. We are very satisfied with AsiaSat 2's service and we found it a very popular satellite among Asia’s leading broadcasters. Our launch of service on AsiaSat 2 would enhance our capability to access more viewers across the Asia Pacific region and to introduce to international audiences the socio-economic and cultural development in Brunei Darussalam," Lim Sam Lee, Ag Director of RTB.

"We are very pleased to have RTB International on AsiaSat 2. The introduction of this channel further strengthens AsiaSat 2's Asian content offerings. This, along with the other television programming from the Middle East, Europe and the United States, affirms AsiaSat 2’s position of being Asia's most comprehensive and popular broadcast platform for international broadcasting," said Peter Jackson, Chief Executive Officer of AsiaSat.

RTB International will be available on AsiaSat 2 in C-band with the following reception parameters:

Transponder: 5B
Frequency: 3786.5 MHz
